MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Canadian Women’s National Team, featuring West Virginia University rising juniors Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence, earned a 1-0 victory over Switzerland Sunday evening at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, in front of a record 53,855 fans at BC Place in Vancouver.
For the fourth game of the tournament, Buchanan played all 90 minutes at center back for Canada. Lawrence started the match at midfield and earned 76 minutes. Buchanan received one of Canada’s two cautions in the 74th minute.
Josée Bélanger connected on a flick from Christine Sinclair in the 52nd minute to give the Canadians their first victory over a European team at the World Cup.
“We knew it would be close and we had to keep them at bay,” said Canada coach John Herdman. “As hosts, we’re obviously under a lot of pressure. Bélanger was fantastic in the second half. I’m proud of my team and what we’ve achieved; they’re warriors who know what need to be done and give it everything they’ve got. The fans were unbelievable again; it was just surreal. We now have a moment to relax before we start gearing up for the next challenge.”
The win pushes the Canadians into the quarterfinals for the only the second time. The squad will meet the winner of England-Norway on Saturday, June 27, at 7:30 p.m. ET.
