WVU, Arizona State to Meet in Motel 6 Cactus Bowl

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Fiesta Bowl Organization is pleased to announce that the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Arizona State Sun Devils will play in the 2016 Motel 6 Cactus Bowl. The Motel 6 Cactus Bowl has become synonymous with high-scoring games, comebacks and big plays, so the post-New Year's matchup is sure to enthrall.
The two teams will face off at 10:15 p.m., EST/8:15 p.m. MST, as the Cactus Bowl returns to Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday, January 2, 2016. West Virginia will represent the Big 12, while Arizona State will represent the Pac-12.
"We are thrilled to welcome West Virginia and Arizona State and their extensive fan bases to our game and to Phoenix," Executive Director Mike Nealy said. "We look forward to another great bowl week and Motel 6 Cactus Bowl game on January 2."
West Virginia finished the season 7-5 and 4-5 in the Big 12. The Mountaineers' offense was led by junior running back Wendell Smallwood, who rushed for 1,447 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. West Virginia is making its second appearance in a Cactus Bowl and first since 1998, when the Mountaineers lost to Missouri in what was then called the Insight.com Bowl.

Arizona State finished the season 6-6 and 4-5 in the Pac-12. The Sun Devils offense was led by the sophomore rushing duo of Demario Richard and Kalen Ballage, who combined for 1,677 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Arizona State is making its second-ever appearance in a Cactus Bowl.
The Motel 6 Cactus Bowl is one of the nation's elite college bowl games. It is an integral part of college football's postseason, and provides sports enthusiasts and community members with the opportunity to take part in making sports history.
