MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer freshmen Bianca St. Georges and Vanessa Flores will compete for Canada and Mexico, respectively, at the 2015 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship.
The tournament, held in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, will serve as the qualification route for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea, with the top three teams moving on to the FIFA tournament.
St. Georges, a native of St. Felix de Valois, Quebec, was named Team Canada’s captain. A defender, she was a two-year member of the Canadian Women’s National U-17 Team and competed at the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica. She also won the Silver medal with Canada at the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship Jamaica.
Flores, a native of Bayton, Texas, is a multi-year member of the Mexican Women’s National U-17 and U-20 Teams. Most recently, the defender competed with the Mexican U-20 Team at the 2015 U-20 Women’s NTC Invitational. Flores also competed at the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica. Additionally, she captained the 2013 Mexican National Team at the 4 Nations Tournament Costa Rica.
Group play begins today at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano. Canada will face Trinidad & Tobago, Honduras and Jamaica in Group A, while Mexico will play Haiti, Panama and the three-time defending champion United States in Group B.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals (Dec. 11), with the winners of those matches meeting in the final (Dec. 13). The semifinal losers will meet in a third-place match (Dec. 13) to determine CONCACAF’s last FIFA representative. The semifinal, consolation and championship matches will be played at the Estadio Francisco Morazan.
St. Georges, the 2015 Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year, stared all 22 matches she was available for this season. She helped the WVU defense post a program-record 15 shutouts. Additionally, she chipped in six assists, the fourth-best total for a Mountaineer freshman. Flores saw time in eight matches this season.
