Dana Holgorsen Cactus Bowl Practice Update

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen announced before today’s practice in Scottsdale, Arizona, that starting cornerback Daryl Worley, starting wide receiver Jovon Durante, backup defensive lineman Eric Kinsey and freshman safety Kevin Williams will not be participating in this year’s Motel 6 Cactus Bowl game against Arizona State.
“This is the only bad news that’s going to hit us this week,” said Holgorsen. “Eric Kinsey failed to meet the academic responsibilities we’ve played upon him as a student-athlete and his career is over. It’s sad for a senior to go out like that, but that’s just the case.
“Jovon Durante and Kevin Williams - it’s a similar situation, but due to the fact that they are freshmen it’s a little easier for them to dig themselves out of that hole but they won’t be with us. The disappointing one is Daryl Worley, which is a little different situation. It was more of a timing issue. Daryl’s a good student and Daryl is eligible, but because his classwork was late getting in, he failed to meet the NCAA bowl certification timeline. They have up until a specific day to get things certified and unfortunately for us, that wasn’t the case.”
Worley was an All-Big 12 first team choice at corner playing opposite Terrell Chestnut and he finished the regular season with six interceptions, 12 pass breakups and was in on 49 total tackles in 12 games.
Durante appeared in all 12 regular season games as a true freshman and made 24 catches for 378 yards and five touchdowns, having his best game early in the season against Georgia State when he caught three passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Kinsey, a senior, was in on 18 tackles, three tackles for losses whike posting a half sack in 12 games as a backup defensive lineman.
Williams, a true freshman from Pompano Beach, Florida, did not see action this season.
Holgorsen said he is hopeful all three underclassmen will make up the necessary coursework and get back on track with the team.
As for Saturday's game against the Sun Devils, Holgorsen said there are plenty of players to cover those areas.
“It’s next guy up,” said Holgorsen. “We feel as a team that we have enough guys to be able to go to bat against a good, competitive Arizona State team. Gary Jennings, David Sills, Ka’Raun (White) looks good. Ricky Rumph, Nana (Kyeremeh) and Larry Jefferson … We’ve got guys, they’ve just got to step up. It probably means some extra snaps for some guys based on playing special teams and some offense and some defense, but we’re not going to blink an eye. We’re going to practice and we’re going to line up and expect to go win.”
