MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s soccer senior Jamie Merriam has been named to the Senior CLASS Award All-America Second Team, the organization announced today.
The Gaithersburg, Maryland, native is the third WVU men’s soccer player to earn Senior CLASS Award honors since 2012 and the second in as many seasons. Andy Bevin was recognized last season, while Eric Schoenle earned the team’s first award in 2012.
“Congratulations to Jamie on this great achievement,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “We are very proud of all that Jamie has accomplished over the last four years and this recognition is a great way for him to end his Mountaineer career.”
Merriam is one of 10 men’s soccer student-athletes to be honored for excelling both on and off the field. Student-athletes are recognized for their achievements in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition.
Merriam capped an impressive career with a spectacular senior season. The midfielder finished the year with a team-high seven goals and was second with 16 points. He led the team with 50 shots and 22 shots on goal. His three game-winning goals was second in the Mid-American Conference. He is sixth in the league with 1.16 shots on goal per game, seventh in goals per game (0.27) and eighth in both shots per game (2.63) and total goals (7).
In his career, Merriam has played in 71 career games with 54 starts and logged 20 goals, 16 assists and 56 points. Six of his goals have been game-winners. Merriam’s 16 career assists is tied for ninth in program history. His 67 career shots on goal is third in program history, while his 157 shots is ninth.
A biometric systems major, Merriam was named to the NSCAA Scholar All-East Region Second Team, the Academic All-MAC Team and the Academic All-Big 12 At-Large First Team as a junior in 2014. He also earned All-Mid-American Conference First Team accolades to cap an impressive junior season.
Merriam has been an active member of the community throughout his collegiate career. He has participated in numerous community service projects and spread a positive message to many people in the community. With the groups he and the team have worked with, Merriam's leadership has helped make a positive impact on those around him.
