No. 23 WVU Heads to Joe Parisi Open

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 23 West Virginia University wrestling team compete in the Fifth Annual Joe Parisi Open, hosted by Lindenwood University at Hyland Area in St. Charles, Missouri, on Saturday.
The event, which is WVU’s first open tournament of the season, will bring WVU head coach Sammie Henson back to his hometown. Henson starred at Francis Howell High before heading to Missouri and Clemson for his collegiate career.
West Virginia went 1-2 at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals in Troy, New York, last weekend, coming away with a 19-13 win over Buffalo while suffering a 21-12 setback to No. 3 Michigan and a 23-9 loss to Oregon State. No. 16/18 Dylan Cottrell went 3-0 on the day while No. 3/4 Zeke Moisey, No. 8 Jacob A. Smith, Bubba Scheffel posted 2-1 records. Cottrell improved to 6-0 on the season, while Moisey and Smith improved their marks to 5-1 in their respective weight classes.
Cottrell, who returns to the mat after transferring from Appalachian State last season, leads the Mountaineers with a 6-0 mark at 157 pounds. The Spencer, West Virginia, native, has a pair of major decisions, a tech. fall for a team-best 25 points. Cottrell leads the team with 23 takedowns and has yet to surrender a takedown to an opponent this season.
Henson announced Wednesday that the squad had signed four student-athletes for the 2016-17 season. Conner Buttry (Osterburg, Pa./Chestnut Ridge HS), Dayton Garrett (Tuttle, Okla./Tuttle HS), Tucker Leavitt (Chubbock, Idaho/Highland) and Matthew Schmitt (Platte City, Mo./Platte County) have signed NLIs and will joined the Mountaineers next year.
. “We are excited to continue with another great recruiting class,” said Henson of his second signing class. “We believe that we have a great group of men in this year to continue our tradition of recruiting some of the nation’s wrestlers. Our geographical reach, amongst our two most recent signing classes, proves that wrestlers all over the country want to be a Mountaineer.”
Tickets for the 2016 Big 12 Wrestling Championship go on sale Monday, Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. CT. This season’s championship, which will take place March 5-6 at Sprint Center in Kansas City, marks the first neutral-site conference championship for the sport. Up next for the Mountaineers is a trip to Las Vegas, where they will compete in their second open tournament of the season at the 34th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Open on Dec. 4 and 5.
