MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After going 3-0 to open the season, the No. 19 West Virginia University wrestling team will face a trio of opponents at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals, hosted at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York, on Sunday. The Mountaineers will take on No. 3 Michigan at 11:15 a.m. before a tilt with Buffalo at 1:15 p.m. They’ll cap the event with a 3:15 p.m. match against Oregon State.
“We look forward to a competitive weekend with the Big Ten, MAC and Pac-12,” said second-year head coach Sammie Henson. “Wrestling Michigan in the first round will be a battle as nine of their 10 starters are ranked. Our men must step up, compete and believe in their training.”
West Virginia took part in the event last season, wrestling Northern Illinois, Rutgers and Cornell.
Sunday will be the eighth all-time meeting between the Wolverines and the Mountaineers in a series that started back in 1928. Michigan holds a 5-2 lead, and claimed the win the last time the two met back in 2004. The Wolverines enter the match ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Poll with nine ranked wrestlers projected to start.
West Virginia is 2-0 against Buffalo, having faced the Bulls in 2001 and 2002. Buffalo enters the match-up 2-0 having defeated Maryland (19-13) and Davidson (47-0). The Bulls are currently unranked.
The Northeast Duals will mark the first-ever meeting between the Beavers and the Mountaineers. OSU is ranked one spot behind WVU in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Poll, coming in at No. 20. The Beavers have not had a dual match this season and boast a trio of ranked wrestlers in the starting lineup.
Starting the season at No. 21 in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Poll, the Mountaineers moved up two spots to No. 19 after going undefeated on opening weekend. West Virginia briefly appeared in the national rankings last season, taking the No. 23 spot after defeating No. 25 Bucknell at the Virginia Duals. They Mountaineers later topped No. 18 Pitt to close out the season. WVU is ranked No. 21 in the InterMat tournament index and has a trio of ranked wrestlers in the lineup: No. 3/4 Zeke Moisey (125), No. 16/18 Dylan Cottrell (157) and No. 8/NR Jacob A. Smith (197).
Four Mountaineers went undefeated to open the season with wins over Drexel, Campbell and Arizona State on Sunday.
