MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s soccer senior Ryan Cain and sophomore Joey Piatczyc have been named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team, the league announced on Thursday.
Cain and Piatczyc are both named to the All-MAC Second Team for the second consecutive season. Piatczyc has a program-record 13 assists on the year, while Cain is tied for the team lead with six goals and is third in points.
“I am very happy for both Ryan and Joey,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. Both of them have been integral in getting us to this point and I’m looking forward to them leading us this weekend at the MAC Championships.”
Piatczyc, a midfielder from Lee’s Summit, Mo., is in the midst of a record-setting campaign. His 13 assists is the most in a single season in program history and is No. 1 among NCAA Division I players. He also leads the nation in assists per game with 0.72 and is first on the team in points with 17, tied for third in shots with 24 and has taken a team-high 76 corner kicks.
The sophomore’s record-setting season began with four assists in WVU’s second match of the season, a 6-0 win over San Francisco on Aug. 30. Piatczyc became the first Mountaineer in team history to have four assists in a match after 14 players had recorded three in a game. It was the first of eight matches where Piatczyc led the team in assists.
Cain, a forward from Paraparauma, New Zealand, has tallied a team-high-tying six goals in 14 matches for the Mountaineers. He is second on the team with 35 shots and 14 shots on goal, while he is third with 12 points. Cain has led the team in goals three times and shots five times, both second on the team.
The senior led the team with two goals in the Mountaineers’ 6-2 victory over James Madison on Sept. 11. Cain netted both goals seven minutes apart, including the game-winner in the 12th minute.
Cain, Piatczyc and the Mountaineers open postseason play at the MAC Championship on Friday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m., at Akron. The Mountaineers earned the No. 4 seed and have advanced to the postseason tournament all four seasons they have competed in the MAC. A preview and match notes can be found at
