MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following its conference title-clinching victory over the weekend, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team remains steady at No. 2 in today’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 Poll.
The Mountaineers (15-1-1, 6-0-1) maintain their position in the poll for the third straight week thanks to a 2-1 overtime victory at Oklahoma State on Oct. 23. The victory clinched at least a share of the Big 12 Conference regular-season title for WVU, giving the Mountaineers four straight Big 12 regular-season crowns and six Big 12 titles in four seasons. Dating back to its days in the Big East Conference, WVU has won nine regular-season titles since 2002 and five in as many years.
Virginia (13-1-1, 7-1 ACC) defeated last week’s No. 1 team, Florida State, 1-0, on Oct. 25 and sits at the top of poll. Stanford (14-2, 8-0 Pac-12) follows WVU at No. 3, and the Seminoles (13-2-2, 6-1-2 ACC) and Virginia Tech (14-2-2, 6-2-1 ACC) rank No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Penn State (12-3-2, 7-2-1 Big Ten) ranks No. 6, Florida (13-3-1, 7-2-1 SEC) is No. 7 and North Carolina (13-3-1, 6-3 ACC) is No. 8. Connecticut (16-2, 8-1 AAC) and BYU (12-2-2, 4-1-1 WCC) round out the top 10.
WVU is the only Big 12 Conference team ranked in this week’s poll.
The sixth NCAA RPI also was released today, and the Mountaineers are up two spots to No. 7, the squad’s highest position of the season. WVU also is the best-positioned Big 12 team, with Texas Tech (9-3-5, 2-2-3) following at No. 27 and Oklahoma (9-6-3, 2-2-3) at No. 50.
Despite Sunday’s loss, FSU continues to rank No. 1, with UVA following at No. 2, PSU at No. 3, Rutgers (13-2-2, 6-2-2 Big Ten) at No. 4 and Stanford at No. 5.
UF is ahead of WVU at No. 6, and Clemson (12-3-1, 6-3 ACC) follows at No. 8. UConn and UNC round out the top 10.
The Mountaineers close their regular-season slate at Baylor on Friday, Oct. 30, with kick from Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field set for 8 p.m. ET. Should the Bears (9-5-2, 4-1-1) defeat TCU tomorrow night, they will remain in contention for a share of the Big 12 Conference regular-season title and would need a victory against the Mountaineers to earn co-champion status.
