ATLANTA, Ga. – Underdog West Virginia dominated the scoreboard and rewrote the record book as it crushed an overconfident Florida team in the 1981 Peach Bowl, prompting Gator head coach Charley Pell to burn the game film.
Seven Peach Bowl records fell during the course of the onslaught. Tailback Mickey Walczak tallied a pair of touchdowns and caught a Peach Bowl record eight passes. Kicker Paul Woodside added a record four field goals as West Virginia registered one of the most impressive victories in its long football history.
Coach Don Nehlen called it his team's "finest hour," and who could argue as the Mountaineers thoroughly dominated the statistics on both sides of the ball.
Quarterback Oliver Luck closed out his career by completing 14 of 23 passes for 107 yards and one touchdown, while guiding West Virginia on one long drive after another. Defensive standout Don Stemple was selected as the game's MVP.
Florida averted the shutout by scoring late in the fourth period, but the Gators ended the blowout with an embarrassing minus 30 yards rushing, thanks to the superb Mountaineer defensive effort led by linebackers Dennis Fowlkes and Darryl Talley, and defensive backs Steve Newberry and Tim Agee.
