West Virginia Defeats Gonzaga At San Diego

SAN DIEGO – West Virginia made its first postseason appearance a successful one as it defeated western foe Gonzaga on Christmas Day in the 1922 East-West Bowl.
The Mountaineers had to hang on for dear life in the sweltering San Diego heat, building up a 21-0 lead after three quarters. Coach Clarence Spears took only 19 players on the trip.
West Virginia started the scoring in the first period as Nick Nardacci slipped through the Gonzaga line for a 12-yard touchdown run. Gonzaga threatened in the second period, but Mountaineer captain Russ Meredith intercepted an errant Gonzaga pass and rambled 80 yards down the sideline for West Virginia's second score. The Mountaineers added another touchdown in the third quarter.
Gonzaga staged a furious comeback in the last period, scoring twice, thanks to two 50-yard runs by Matt Bross following pass completions, but the Mountaineer defense held strong to seal bowl victory number one.
