Ashby Dickerson

A member of the first national champion team in any sport at West Virginia, Ashby Dickerson was a bruising heavyweight who helped lead WVU to a share of the 1938 boxing title.
Dickerson teamed with 165-pounder Sam Littlepage in winning individual championships as the Mountaineers split the 1938 crown with Virginia and Catholic University.
Dickerson, who lettered from 1936-38 for Coach Eddie Vacheresse, went undefeated in 1938 and captured the heavyweight national title.
During his career, he won three straight Eastern Intercollegiate Boxing Conference heavyweight championships and the Mountaineers went 13-6-3 in dual meets. WVU also won the 1936 EIBC team title.
The Rhodell, West Virginia, native went undefeated in dual matches during his career and qualified for the 1936 U.S. Olympic trials.
The late Dickerson also played one season of football, but did not letter. He became the first boxer inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame.
