Matt O’Neill enters his first season with the West Virginia University swimming and diving program after joining the staff as the head diving coach in August 2025.
Prior to West Virginia
O’Neill was at Harvard from 2019 to 2025, leading 15 individual NCAA Championships qualifiers and three NCAA All-Americans for the Crimson. During this time, Harvard won four Ivy League men’s championships and one Ivy League women’s title. O’Neill also coached Harvard divers to 57 Ivy League top eight finishes and five Ivy League champions.
Prior to his time with Harvard, O’Neill was the head diving coach for Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, from 2015 to 2019. During his career, O’Neill has coached 53 NCAA Zone Diving Championships qualifiers and over 40 College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Academic All-Americans.
O’Neill also served as the head diving coach for American Flyers Diving in Cleveland, leading the team to a fifth place overall finish at the 2018 USA Diving Junior National Championship.
O’Neill dove for the Mountaineers from 2008-12, earning Second Team All-Big East recognition on the three-meter springboard in 2012. O’Neill also placed second on 3-meter at the Big East Championships in 2012. He was also named the most valuable diver for WVU for the 2010-11 season.
During his freshman season, O’Neill set the program record on 3-meter with 329.78 points. As a junior, he also placed seventh on 1-meter and 3-meter at the Big East Championships. During his career, O’Neill also held the 1-meter program record.
O’Neill earned a B.A. in athletic coaching education from West Virginia University.
