
Mountaineers Beat Penn State for First Time Since 2010, Drop Meet to Virginia Tech

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team picked up a win against Penn State for the first time since 2010 and lost to No. 11 Virginia Tech at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Virginia, on Saturday.

West Virginia (1-1) was tremendous against the Nittany Lions during both days of action, winning, 217-134. The Mountaineers fell to the Hokies, 266-87.

Sophomore Jake Salcedo returned to the pool and picked up right where he left off at the end of his freshman season. He placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:23.79) and the 1000-yard freestyle (9:12.76). His 1000-yard freestyle time inches him closer to the program record of 9:08.91.

In his first college meet, freshman Rafael Arizpe finished just 1.2 seconds off the leader in the 400-yard individual medley, placing second with a final time of 3:50.42. That already ranks him seventh all-time at WVU.

Freshman Roman Torres also flashed his speed, placing third in the 200-yard butterfly (1:47.15) and fourth in the 200-yard IM (1:48.57). He now ranks sixth all-time in the 200 butterfly at WVU.

Junior Szymon Mieczkowski placed third in the 100-yard backstroke (47.07) and was part of two relay teams — 400-yard medley relay (3:12.77) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:01.22) — that placed third for the Mountaineers.

In the diving well, redshirt junior Owen Recker led the Mountaineers on 1-meter, placing third with a final score of 308.25. Junior Levi Hellmann placed third on 3-meter (317.10).

For the women's team, sophomore Stevi Chalemou placed sixth on 3-meter (237.60) and freshman Abby Foskey finished seventh on 1-meter (225.20).

West Virginia returns to action against Cincinnati and Delaware on Oct. 23-24, in Morgantown.
