Mountaineers Tie UConn to Cap Nonconference Slate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 8-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with UConn to cap its nonconference slate at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Sunday afternoon.
With the tie, the Mountaineers complete an unbeaten nonconference slate with a 5-0-1 record. The performance marks the squad's third nonconference campaign without a loss, including the 2006 and 2020-21 nonconference seasons.
Senior forward Abbey Olexa put West Virginia on the board early, scoring her second goal of the season in the third minute. Olexa took a ball from sophomore midfielder Ava Arnold just at the top of the 18-yard box and took the UConn goalie by surprise to bounce it in for the score. Senior midfielder Anna Hauer's one-touch pass to Arnold also was credited with an assist on the score.
In the second half, UConn was able to draw even in the 52nd minute. From there, WVU was unable to reclaim the lead, with only a handful of shots in the second half. Both teams fought for the go-ahead, but the score remained tied at the final whistle.
In the final box score, WVU narrowly edged UConn in shots, 10-9, while the Huskies claimed a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-3 lead in corner kicks. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth corralled a season-best five saves.
Of note, junior defender Mia Paugh made her first career start as a Mountaineer on Sunday.
Up next, West Virginia opens Big 12 Conference play against No. 17 Baylor on Friday, Sept. 18. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET. It's the Mountaineers' first-ever Coal Rush match, as the team will debut its new black jersey and all fans are encouraged to wear black.
