MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams begin the season with a home meet for the women's team against Marshall on Friday, Oct. 2, and a meet for the men's team against Virginia Tech with Penn State on Oct. 2-3, in Christiansburg, Virginia.
Â
The Mountaineers host the Thundering Herd at 1 p.m. at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown. West Virginia faces the Hokies and Nittany Lions at 5 p.m. on Oct. 2 and 10 a.m. Oct. 3.
Â
"I think there is a lot of excitement amongst our staff and certainly our team about our incoming group and the talent we have," coach Brent MacDonald said. "We've set up a really great schedule this year to challenge this group and get them ready for what the end of the season with the Big 12 and NCAA Championships will look like.
Â
"That was a conscious effort we made in our schedule to really challenge ourselves with some high-end opponents. If we're going to compete at a national level, then we need to make sure we're going to see those opponents week after week."
Â
West Virginia defeated Marshall last season for one of its three dual meet wins for the women's team.
Â
For the men's team, Virginia Tech is one of four teams the Mountaineers will face this year that placed in the top 20 at the NCAA men's swimming and diving championships. The Hokies placed 11th last year and 10th in 2025.
Â
This will be the first of two meetings between Penn State and West Virginia this season as both squads will square off in January 2027 to end the regular season for WVU.
Â
Out of four Mountaineer medalists at the Big 12 Championships last year, two return — junior Levi Hellmann and sophomore Rafael Mimoso.
Â
Mimoso earned a seventh-place finish in the men's 200-yard breaststroke at the conference championship. He followed that up with a superb summer, setting the program record in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:14.43) three times.
Sophomore Jake Salcedo also had a busy summer, setting the program record in the 400-meter freestyle (3:57.77) at the Speedo Junior National Championships in July.
Â
This weekend begins a challenging schedule for the Mountaineers as MacDonald enters his third season at the helm of the program.
