
Mountaineers Remain Perfect All-Time Against Akron

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team rolled over No. 15 Akron, 4736-2683, on Saturday in the team's first match of 2026 at the Bill McKenzie Mobile Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.
The win marks the Mountaineers' ninth over a ranked opponent this season and moves WVU to a perfect 2-0 in Great America Rifle Conference Action.
The Mountaineers produced winning efforts in both smallbore and air rifle, with scores of 2351 and 2385, respectively. The Zips finished with scores of 2320 in smallbore and 2363 in air rifle.
For smallbore and air rifle, junior Lauri Syrja and Griffin Lake, and sophomores Jennifer Kocher, Jacob Wisman, and Camryn Camp served as counters. The Mountaineers claimed seven of the top 10 aggregate scores on the afternoon.
Griffin Lake led the way in the match, producing the top aggregate score of 1188 and adding the top smallbore mark of 592. He added a third-place finish in air rifle with a 596. His mark in smallbore was the fourth time in five matches this season that he has hit the score or higher. For his 120 competition shots, Lake secured 90 centers.
Jennifer Kocher finished just behind in second place with an aggregate score of 1185. She scored a 598 in air rifle, the top mark and matching a career high, while adding a 587 in smallbore. Lauri Syrja finished in fourth place with a 1180 after hitting marks of 586 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle.
Oceanne Muller competed in her first match in the Gold and Blue, turning in a 1178 aggregate score to take fifth on the overall leaderboard. She scored a 589 in both smallbore and air rifle. Ashlyn Blake also scored 1178 after a 583 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle.
Jacob Wisman and Camryn Camp finished in seventh and eighth, respectively. Wisman scored a 1177 (586 SB – 591 AR) while Camp hit a 1173 (576 SB – 597 AR). Camp's score in air rifle is a season high.
Maximus Duncan and Jack Ogoreuc also competed at the event. Duncan scored a 1167 while Ogoreuc managed a 1164.
The Mountaineers are a perfect 25-0 all-time against Akron in a series that dates back to 1952.
West Virginia is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 24, when they take on Navy inside Bancroft Hall Rifle Range in Annapolis, Maryland. The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET.
