PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Fifth-year Peyton Hall and senior Jett Strickenberger advanced to the quarterfinals on the first day of the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Hall picked up two wins by technical fall as he rolled through to the quarterfinals in the 165-pound weight class. Hall defeated Wisconsin's No. 31 seed Cody Goebel, 19-1, in the first session and defeated Northwestern's No. 18 seed Maxx Mayfield, 20-4, in the second session.
Against Mayfield, Hall registered six takedowns en route to a dominant victory. His two victories tie him with Vertus Jones for the second-most career wins at the NCAA Wrestling Championships with 14.
Strickenberger continued his dominant stretch that began at the 2025 Big 12 Wrestling Championships with two wins to advance to the quarterfinals in the 125-pound weight class. Strickenberger began the day by defeating North Dakota State's No. 27 seed Tristan Daughtery by decision, 7-2.
He followed that victory up in the second session with a win by major decision over Wisconsin's No. 11 seed Nicolar Rivera.
This is the first time since 2022 that two Mountaineers advanced to the quarterfinals at the same wrestling championships. Kilian Cardinale and Hall advanced to the quarterfinals in the 125-pound weight class and 165-pound weight class, respectively.
Redshirt sophomore Ian Bush was the only other Mountaineer to earn a win. He defeated Appalachian State's No. 33 seed Carson Floyd by decision, 5-4. Bush was later eliminated from the tournament in the first round of the consolation matches.
Redshirt senior Dennis Robin and redshirt junior Jordan Titus each lost twice on the day to be eliminated from the tournament.
