MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team defeated James Madison, 3-1, on Wednesday to complete a two-game sweep. The Mountaineers improve to 18-1 while the Dukes fall to 7-14.
Freshman David Hagen threw 5.0 innings with four strikeouts while allowing just one run to earn the win. Senior Reese Bassinger tossed 2.1 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts while graduate student Jack Kartsonas struck out four in 1.2 perfect innings to earn his first save. The three pitchers did not walk a batter on the night.
Junior Skylar King went 3-for-3 at the plate to improve his average to .444 while also making a stellar diving catch in centerfield. Senior Brodie Kresser had the only RBI of the game for the Mountaineers.
James Madison jumped out to an early lead with a solo home run in the first, but that was all the Dukes managed in the contest.
Kresser hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the third before West Virginia scored two in the fourth to take the lead. With the bases loaded, Sam White led a triple steal as he swiped home plate, the Mountaineers second straight steal of home this season. A wild pitch followed allowing another run to score.
The Dukes did not have a runner reach third base the rest of the night as West Virginia earned a big win before Big 12 foe Arizona comes to Kendrick Family Ballpark this weekend. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
