
West Virginia Wins WVU Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After three days of competition, the West Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams won the WVU Invitational on Friday at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
The women's team rallied on the final day behind excellent performances in the diving well to finish in first place with 1,941 points ahead of William and Mary. The men's team dominated over the course of the three-day meet to place first with 2,584 points.
In the diving well, freshman Stavroula Chalemou won on platform with 243.95 total points for her first individual victory of the weekend. In the team diving event, the women's team excelled behind the trio of Chalemou, senior Abigail Sullivan and redshirt senior Amari Brown-Swint as they won the event with 267.30 total points.
On the men's side, sophomore Levi Hellmann earned his second individual victory of the weekend, winning platform with 332.55 points.
Finals began in the pool with the 1650-yard freestyle event. Junior Vedaant Madhavan won the event on the men's side with the second-fastest time in program history at 15:19.43. Freshman Jake Salcedo placed second with a final time of 15:32.37.
Redshirt sophomore Szymon Mieczkowski continued an impressive week with his third individual win of the invite. He won the men's 200-yard backstroke with a final time of 1:42.47. That time marks the fourth-fastest in program history for that event.
On the women's side, junior Maddie Smutny earned an important victory for the Mountaineers as she soared in the 200-yard butterfly. With a final time of 1:59.03, Smutny finished just behind her personal best.
Freshman Rafael Mimoso earned the last individual victory of the night for the men's team in the 200-yard breaststroke. He touched the wall at 1:56.75 to win the event, recording the fifth-fastest time in program history.
West Virginia will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10, against Pitt for the Backyard Brawl at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
