
Salcedo Shines on Day One of WVU Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished competition on day one of the WVU Invitational on Thursday at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W.Va.
The men's team currently sits in first place with 700 total points. The women's team is in second behind William and Mary with 485 points.
It was a shaky start for the Mountaineers as William and Mary won the women's 200-yard freestyle to begin the night. West Virginia placed fifth with a final time of 1:33.31.
On the men's side, the Mountaineers came up just behind Drexel for a second place finish (1:20.02). However, the men's team quickly took control of the evening as freshman Jake Salcedo once again proved his ability in the men's 500-yard freestyle event.
Salcedo posted the fifth-fastest time in program history (4:23.80) while taking first place. Redshirt junior Vedaant Madhavan placed third with a final time of 4:27.44. A two-way tie rounded out the top four as freshmen Gabriel Tortola and Oliver Stull touched the wall at 4:29.76.
In the women's 200-yard individual medley, freshmen Tabi Main and Baylee Sloan placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Main recorded the ninth-fastest time in program history (2:02.58). On the men's side, sophomore Szymon Mieczkowski won the event with a final time of 1:48.72.
Junior Zsombor Bujdoso finished right behind Mieczkowski to place second (1:49.03).
West Virginia ended the night with a dominant victory in the men's 400-yard medley relay with a final time of 3:12.04. Georgetown placed second with a final time of 3:15.10.
In the diving well, sophomore Levi Hellmann led the way for the Mountaineers as he won the men's 1-meter (307.40). For the women's team, freshman Stevi Chalemou led the team as she finished fourth (261.85).

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. Finals are slated for a 6 p.m. start.
