
Mountaineers Finish on Top at WVU Fall Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 5-ranked West Virginia University rifle team finished in first place at the WVU Fall Classic with a team score of 4742 on Sunday afternoon, at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown.
West Virginia (13-1, 1-0 GARC) finished the event 27 points ahead of No. 12 Kentucky, which finished the event in second with a score of 4715. No. 16 Morehead State took third with a 4673, No. 18 North Georgia claimed fourth with a 4611, Mount Aloysius jumped into fifth place at 4536, while Wofford rounds out the teams with a 4530.
The winning effort by West Virginia marks the eighth time this season that the Mountaineers have defeated ranked opponents.
Six Mountaineers packed the leaderboard, with juniors Griffin Lake and Lauri Syrja claiming the top two spots. In total, six Mountaineers occupied the top nine spots in the overall standings.
Lake fired a 598 in air rifle to finish in a three-way tie for the top score in the discipline. Combined with his smallbore mark yesterday of 594, Lake finished in first place with a 1192 aggregate total.
Syrja finished just behind with a 1188. He posted an air rifle total of 597 this afternoon, while his mark of 591 in smallbore was the second best in the field. His aggregate total is a new season high.
Sophomore Jennifer Kocher finished in fifth place with a score of 1179 (584 SB – 595 AR). Freshman Jack Ogoreuc finished in seventh place after scoring 1175 (580 SB – 595 AR). Ogoreuc's mark in air rifle is a career high.
Sophomore Camryn Camp and senior Maximus Duncan finished in a tie for eighth place with matching 1173. Camp scored a 588 in smallbore and a 585 in air rifle, while Duncan scored a 582 in smallbore and a 591 in air rifle.
Sophomore Ashlyn Blake was the final Mountaineer in action with a 1170 total score. She produced a 575 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle.
The scores of Lake, Syrja, Camp, Kocher and Blake counted toward the Mountaineers' team total.
The WVU Fall Classic marked the final event for the Mountaineers for the fall season. West Virginia will return to the line on Saturday, Jan. 17, when it competes against Akron at the WVU Rifle Range in Morgantown.
