MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Kaleb Wilson and Nick Turowski tied for ninth place to lead the West Virginia University golf team to a third-place finish at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational in Loxley, Alabama, this weekend.
The event was shortened to 36 holes due to inclement weather on Sunday.
Wilson shot rounds of 72-69=141 and Turowski recorded rounds of 70-69=141 to finish at 3-under-par. Ryan Leach tied for 23rd place with rounds of 73-71=144 (Even), Westy McCabe tied for 33rd place with rounds of 75-71=146 (+2) and Jack Michael tied for 64th place with rounds of 73-79=152 (+8).
The Mountaineers finished in third place after shooting rounds of 286 and 284 (-6) in the 14-team field. No. 35 WVU defeated No. 33 Purdue and No. 23 Wake Forest with No. 38 Texas A&M winning the event at -10.
"This team did a great job of battling back from a rough start," coach Sean Covich said. "The closing stretch to round one really made a big difference and allowed us to climb the leaderboard. This week and really all season, the guys showed a positive mindset and attitude regardless of their score. From a work ethic and attitude standpoint, this is the best I've seen from a WVU golf team. I believe that plus their ability to fight for every shot has allowed them to experience success this season."
West Virginia, now sporting a record of 55-14-0 this fall, will close out its fall slate at the Pearl at Kalauao Invitational in O'ahu, Hawaii, on Nov. 5-6.
