MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two goals from junior
Pablo Pozos paved the way for a 2-0 victory by the No. 3 West Virginia University men's soccer over American, Tuesday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 9-1-2 while the Eagles fall to 5-7-1.
Pozos now has 10 goals this season, the first Mountaineer to double-digits this season and the fourth different WVU player and fifth overall to reach double-digits in the last three seasons. He is one of eight players in the nation with at least 10 goals.
Senior
Marcus Caldeira collected his team-leading seventh assist of the season to go along with his seven goals, giving him 21 points this season, tied for the team-lead with Pozos. Senior
Felix Ewald and junior
Constantinos Christou both picked up their second assists of the year.
Graduate student
Marc Bonnaire made two saves to secure his sixth shutout of the season. His biggest of the night came when he stopped a penalty kick late in the first half, keeping the momentum on WVU's side.
The game was scoreless until the 36
th minute when Caldeira found Ewald running into the box. Ewald then sent a low cross back toward the middle where Pozos was there to knock it home.
Just a few minutes later in the 39
th minute, Pozos found the back of the net once again, flicking in a cross from Christou past a helpless American goalkeeper.
In the 40
th minute, the Eagles were fouled just outside the box. The ensuing free kick hit the hand of a Mountaineer player, leading to a penalty. Reyes Parra stepped up for American, but Bonnaire was there to make a diving save to his right.
The second half had just one shot on goal by both teams with no other serious threats until the game's final whistle.
The Mountaineers will return to Sun Belt play on Saturday at Georgia State. Kickoff from Atlanta is set for 7 p.m.
