West Virginia Sweeps Liberty on Sunday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (4-5, 0-0 Big 12) collected its first sweep of the season, defeating Liberty, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Liberty Tournament in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The Mountaineers claimed the victory with scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 25-14. WVU outscored Liberty in multiple statistical categories, hitting .310 percent throughout the match while collecting 43 kills and 12 service aces.
Junior outside hitter Quincey Coyle and redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton led the floor with 12 kills each. Tanton notched her sixth double-double of the season, adding 12 digs while serving up three aces.
Senior outside hitter Hailey Green led with a .563 clip, dropping down 10 kills on 16 attacks.
Defensively, junior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim accounted for all of WVU's six total blocks, tying her season best. Graduate student libero Sydney Reed contributed 10 digs, while Coyle and graduate student setter Lauren DeLo added seven.
Green and Ibrahim were named to the all-tournament team after their stellar weekend performances.
West Virginia started the match off early with a 4-1 lead in set one. A kill and an ace from Tanton alongside two LU errors extended West Virginia's lead, 17-9. The Mountaineers closed out the set, putting up three unanswered points, taking the first, 25-15.
Back-to-back kills from Tanton and Coyle gave WVU the early, 2-0 set two lead. With the score tied at seven, Liberty took control for the first time in the match and took the lead, 9-8. Three kills from Tanton and an ace from sophomore setter Alexis Finnvold slowed the Flames, as West Virginia regained the advantage, 11-9. Liberty went on to tie the score once again at 16, which was answered by a 5-0 Mountaineer run. A late scoring push from the Flames wasn't enough to hold off WVU, as the Mountaineer secured set two, 25-22.
A 12-2 scoring run at the beginning of the third set made victory seem eminent for the Mountaineers. The Flames attempted to chip into the WVU advantage, dishing a 3-0 run as the Mountaineers led, 18-11. A pair of kills from Green is all it took to close the door on the Flames, as West Virginia took the third and final set 25-14.
West Virginia returns to the court on Friday, Sept. 20 with a match against Fairfield at 5 p.m. ET in Fairfield, Connecticut. The Mountaineers will then conclude non-conference play versus Binghamton on Sept. 21 in the Bronx, New York at 2 p.m.
