
West Virginia Opens 2024 Season at Wake Forest

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team opens its 50th year of competition as it travels to the Wake Forest Invitational on Aug. 30-Sept. 1 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The Mountaineers will face off against Navy on Aug. 30 at 3 p.m. ET, followed by a matchup with Wake Forest on Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. West Virginia concludes the weekend versus Hofstra on Sept. 1 at noon. All matches will be held inside Reynolds Gymnasium.
Saturday's match versus Wake Forest will be the only game streamed throughout the weekend on ACCNX+, while live stats are available at WVUsports.com.
Entering her first season at the helm of the Mountaineers, Jen Greeny boats a career record of 347-199 (.636). West Virginia returns six student athletes from the 2023 season, with the additions of five transfers and two freshmen.
The Mountaineers return starters in junior outside hitter Quincey Coyle, graduate student setter Lauren DeLo, senior outside hitter Hailey Green and sophomore middle blocker Maddy McGath. WVU added veteran experience in the portal with the additions of middle blocker Laila Ibrahim, graduate student libero Sydney Reed and redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton.
During the 2023 season, Green led the Mountaineers with 418 kills on a .242 clip while DeLo collected 1,061 assists and 9.47 assists per set to lead the squad.
DeLo, Green and Reed were tabbed as this year's captains after being selected by their teammates and coaches.
West Virginia was picked to finish fourteenth in the 2024 Big 12 Preseason Poll, as selected by the league's head coaches. The 2024 campaign marks the inaugural season for conference newcomers Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah. The Mountaineers will face off against all four newcomers this season.
Friday's match up marks the sixth meeting between West Virginia and Navy, the Mountaineers lead the series 5-0 with the last win, 3-0, on Sept. 4, 2021. On Saturday, the Mountaineers will face off against Wake Forest for the seventh time, West Virginia leads the all-time series, 4-2, dating back to 1983. West Virginia concludes the weekend versus Hoftsra for the teams seventh meeting, with the all-time series being tied at 3-3.
