Mountaineers Drop Game One of Super Regional to UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The West Virginia University baseball team fell to No. 4 North Carolina, 8-6, Friday night in game one of the best-of-three NCAA Super Regional at Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium. The Mountaineers fall to 36-23 on the season while the Tar Heels go to 46-14.
Junior Kyle West went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI for the Mountaineers while senior Reed Chumley added a home run and two RBI.
On the mound, senior Derek Clark battled through 8.1 innings while striking out eight but suffered just his third loss of the season.
The scoring got started in the third inning as West hit his first home run since May 3 just over the right field wall. However, UNC answered in the home half with four runs to take the lead.
West got a run back in the fourth as he hit a double in the right-center field gap to score junior Brodie Kresser from first. The throw to the plate got there in plenty of time, but Kresser dove and got his hand under the tag of the catcher.
In the sixth, Chumley tied up the game with a two-run home run, his team-leading 16th of the season before West put the Mountaineers back in front with a no-doubt two-run home run onto the field hockey field beyond the right-field fence.
The Tar Heels hit a solo home run in the seventh to get back within one run. After 1-2-3 eighth inning, Clark came back out for the ninth but gave up a leadoff home run to Luke Stevenson to end his night. A couple of batters later, UNC start centerfielder Vance Honeycutt hit a two-run walk-off home run.
West Virginia will now have to win tomorrow to force a winner-take-all game three. First pitch on Saturday is set for 8 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN2.
