Mountaineers Set for Road Test at Cincinnati

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team hits the road this weekend, May 3-5, to take on Cincinnati. First pitch from UC Baseball Stadium on Friday is set for 5 p.m., Saturday for 3 p.m., and Sunday for 1 p.m.

All three games will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Mountaineers Sports Network on all radio affiliates as well as the Varsity Network, WVU Gameday App, and WVUSports.com.

The Mountaineers enter the weekend with a 27-16 record after defeating Pitt, 11-1, at PNC Park on Tuesday. Junior Grant Hussey hit two home runs in the game to give him the all-time WVU record with 36 in his career. Sophomore Ben Lumsden also hit a home run in the victory while four pitchers combined to strike out 11 in seven innings.

In the Big 12, West Virginia is tied for second place at 14-7 alongside Oklahoma State, both of whom are just one game back of Oklahoma. The Mountaineers have collected sweeps over UCF, Kansas and Baylor in the last four weeks.

Junior JJ Wetherholt leads the Mountaineers with a .339 batting average while Hussey and junior Kyle West each have 11 home runs to lead the team.

On the mound, senior Derek Clark leads all qualified pitchers in the Big 12 with a 2.72 ERA while junior Aidan Major has a team-high 73 strikeouts. Five different relievers have ERAs below four with freshman Joseph Fredericks leading the way at 1.59.

Led by Head Coach Jordan Bischel in his first year, Cincinnati is 25-20 overall and 11-10 in its first season in the Big 12.

The Bearcats like to run on the basepaths as they are 20th in the country with 90 stolen bases.

Josh Hegemann leads the team with a .343 batting average while Josh Kross has a team-high 13 home runs and 54 RBI. On the mound, Nathan Taylor leads Cincinnati with 55 strikeouts while Brenden Garula has a 3.35 ERA mostly out of the bullpen.
