Mountaineers Fall to Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 22 West Virginia University baseball team dropped the first game of the series to Texas Tech, 15-2, Friday night at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. The Mountaineers fall to 23-14 overall and 11-5 in the Big 12 while the Red Raiders go to 27-13 and 10-9 in conference play.
Junior Kyle West had two hits, including his ninth home run of the season. Senior Reed Chumley and junior Grant Hussey also added hits on the night.
Texas Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning and extended its lead in the third with four more runs before tacking on another in the fifth.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the sixth as West crushed a 467-foot two-run home run onto the track beyond the right field fence.
The Red Raiders responded, however, in the home half of the sixth as they hit a grand slam to push their lead to 11-2. They added four more runs in the eighth.
The two teams will be back tomorrow for game two of the series with first pitch set for 7 p.m. ET, pushed back from its originally scheduled time of 3 p.m. ET.
