MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In front of a record crowd, the West Virginia University baseball team defeated Pitt, 6-3, Tuesday evening at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 23-13 while the Panthers fall to 14-19.
Shattering the previous record set last season against Oklahoma, 4,614 fans came out to cheer on the Mountaineers to their fourth straight victory and sixth straight win in the Backyard Brawl.
"I wish I could go aisle to aisle and just shake everybody's hand and just thank them for the support that they have given this program," said head coach Randy Mazey. "We put an entertaining product on the field, so fans come to have fun but they also help us win."
Junior Brodie Kresser reached base four times and had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Five different Mountaineers drove in a run and six different WVU players crossed home plate.
On the mound, junior Tyler Switalski started the game and went 3.2 scoreless innings while striking out three. Senior Hayden Cooper earned the win with four innings in relief while sophomore Carson Estridge struck out a pair in the ninth for his second save of the season.
West Virginia did all its scoring in the third and fourth innings, scoring three runs in each. The first run came in on a wild pitch before sophomore Sam White hit an RBI double and senior Reed Chumley had a sacrifice fly.
In the fourth, freshman Aaron Jamison singled home a run before freshman Spencer Barnett executed a safety squeeze to bring Kresser home. Sophomore Logan Sauve capped the scoring with an RBI single.
Pitt made it closer in the eighth with three runs, but freshman Joseph Fredericks came out of the bullpen and struck out his only batter on three pitches to squash any rally attempt.
The Mountaineers will be on the road this weekend to take on Texas Tech. First pitch from Lubbock on Friday is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
