CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team defeated its in-state rival Marshall, 11-2, on Tuesday at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston. The Mountaineers improve to 10-7 while the Thundering Herd fall to 6-10.
West Virginia has now won seven straight games against Marshall and 14 of the last 15 in the series dating back to 2016.
Senior Reed Chumley went 4-for-4 with a home run, double, four RBI and two runs scored. University of Charleston transfer Kyle West also added his second home run of the season while sophomore Sam White and Ellis Garcia each collected a pair of RBI.
Once again, the Mountaineer bullpen was stellar as six pitchers combined to throw 7.0 scoreless innings while striking out 13 batters and allowing just four baserunners. Sophomore Robby Porco struck out three in 2.0 innings to earn his first win of the season.
Marshall took an early lead with two runs in the first but that was all the Herd would get on the night.
The Mountaineers took the lead in the third with a six-run frame, first getting a two-run double from White and an RBI single from sophomore Benjamin Lumsden before Chumley smacked his first home run with WVU, a three-run shot that just eluded the center fielder's leaping attempt.
WVU added a run in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk and a run in the fifth courtesy of a sacrifice fly from freshman Spencer Barnett. In the sixth, Garcia and Chumley each hit RBI doubles to put WVU into double digits on the scoreboard.
West provided the cherry on top in the eighth as he hit a screaming line drive home run to right-center field.
The Mountaineers will return to Morgantown this weekend for a series against Ohio State. First pitch from Kendrick Family Ballpark on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
