
Berlitz Sets Program Record on Second Night of Big 12 Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished competition during the second day of the 2024 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown on Wednesday.
For the second straight night, senior Danny Berlitz set a program record as he placed fifth in the 200 individual medley A final. Berlitz broke his record that was set in 2023 (1:44.50) with a 1:43.94.
West Virginia had two more swimmers in the A final. In his first appearance at the Big 12 Swimming Championship, freshman Ian McKinney competed in the 500 freestyle, and sophomore Mia Cheatwood participated in the 200 individual medley.
McKinney placed eighth with a personal best time of 4:27.88. In the B final, senior Ivan Puskovitch placed first with a final time of 4:22.83.
Cheatwood placed eighth in the 200 individual medley A final with a 2:01.04. In the B final, senior Lilly Culp placed second with a 2:02.37.
In the B final of the women's 500 freestyle, freshman Madeline Smutny finished with a 4:52.18 to place second.
Sophomore Ada Szwabinska placed second in the women's B final of the 50 freestyle with a 22.86. Junior Conner McBeth placed fourth in the men's B final of the 50 freestyle with a final time of 20.28.
In the diving well, freshman Owen Recker finished in 11th place and junior Glenn Eloriaga placed 16th in the men's 1-meter.
The women's diving team placed eighth in the team diving event with a final score of 251.05.
After two days, the men's swimming and diving team has 344.50 total points to sit in fourth place and the women's swimming and diving team is in sixth place with 251 points.
West Virginia will continue Big 12 competition on Thursday, Feb. 29. The preliminary round begins at 10 a.m., while the finals begin at 6 p.m.
