LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Fifth-year senior Peyton Hall (165) claimed a 3-0 record inside the Las Vegas Convention Center to lead the way for the West Virginia University wrestling team on day one of the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Following an undefeated performance on Friday, top-seeded Hall advanced to tomorrow's semifinals against a familiar foe in No. 4-seed Hunter Garvin of Stanford. The pair are tied 1-1 in the all-time series after Hall pinned the Sun Devil three weeks ago at the NWCA All-Star Classic in State College, Pennsylvania.
The Chester, West Virginia, native became the first Mountaineer to advance to the final four at the CKLV since Jacob Smith achieved the feat at 197 pounds in 2016.
Additionally, redshirt senior Dennis Robin (184) remains alive for a third-place finish in the consolation bracket behind a 4-1 record, which includes a pair of comeback victories over No. 7-seed William Ebert of Binghamton (6-5) and Nathan Hass of Cal Baptist (11-9) to conclude the night. Robin matches up with No. 8-seed Seth Shumate in a rematch from Shumate's 6-2 decision over Robin at the Cleveland State Open in 2023.
No. 18 West Virginia also scored 28.5 total points as a team to end day one in 12th place. No. 3 Oklahoma State (105.0) holds the top spot, followed by No. 4 Nebraska (83.5), No. 12 Iowa State (71.5), No. 5 Ohio State (69.0) and No. 10 Northern Iowa (62.5) to round out the top five.
