MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (8-18, 2-13 Big 12) was defeated by No. 19 Utah, 3-0 on Thursday night inside of the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Junior middle blocker
Laila Ibrahim led the way for the Mountaineers, tallying seven kills and five total blocks while hitting .333%. Senior outside hitter
Hailey Green led the team in kills, collecting eight.
West Virginia totaled 44 digs, with graduate student
Sydney Reed dishing 14 and senior defensive specialist
Kristen McBride adding a career high eight, respectively.
The Mountaineers kicked off the first set with a 2-0 lead, after a service ace from junior outside hitter
Quincey Coyle gave WVU the advantage. West Virginia continued to hold that lead, as a kill from Ibrahim would get the Mountaineers to 15 points first, 15-12. Utah responded with an 8-0 scoring run, making the score 20-15. WVU would only contribute two more points before the Utes took the first set, 25-17.
Utah flipped the script and lead 2-0 in the second set. Graduate setter
Lauren DeLo stepped up to hammer in a kill, as West Virginia trailed, 9-6. Utah would continue to lead throughout the set, as a 3-0 scoring run would give the Utes a large, 20-11 upper hand. A pair of Utah errors gave WVU a pair of points at the end of the set, until a Ute kill would take the second, 25-15.
The Utes kicked off the third set with yet another 2-0 lead. Utah would continue to dominate the set, until two kills from Ibrahim paired with a swing from freshman outside hitter
Nina Svetina would tie it all up at eight. West Virginia powered on to take their biggest lead since the first set, 12-9 after four straight points. Utah clapped back with a 5-0 run, taking back the lead, 15-13. A 10-2 Utes run sealed the match, as Utah took the third and final set, 25-16.
Next, West Virginia will face No. 24 BYU on Nov. 23 in Provo, Utah. First serve is set for 3 p.m. ET, at the George Albert Smith Fieldhouse.
