
West Virginia Falls to No. 24 BYU on Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (8-19, 2-14 Big 12) fell to No. 24 BYU, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon inside of the George Albert Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah.
The Cougars claimed victory with scores of 19-25, 17-25 and 18-25.
West Virginia out dug their opponent for the tenth time this season, collecting 22 digs compared to the Cougars 18.
Senior outside hitter Hailey Green led the West Virginia with 12 kills, while collecting three digs. Additionally, sophomore middle blocker Maddy McGath tallied eight kills.
Junior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim added seven kills, along with a block. Freshman Nina Svetina also added seven kills, good enough for a new career high.
BYU began the match with an early lead, 3-1. West Virginia continued to trail, until a 5-0 scoring run that was capped with back-to-back service aces from junior outside hitter Quincey Coyle tied the score at 17 all. Svetina tied the tally again at 18, until four straight Cougar points gave BYU the 22-18 lead. The Cougars went on to close the first set with a 4-1 run, 25-19.
West Virginia turned the tide at the start of the second set, taking a 3-1 advantage with graduate student libero Sydney Reed behind the service line. BYU responded with a trio of points, making the score 6-4. A kill from Ibrahim, paired with two BYU errors got the Mountaineers within three points, 12-9. The Cougars went on dominate the set, before a kill from junior middle blocker Chalina Lederer and a BYU error would slow the team to a 22-16 lead. The Cougars continued, taking the second set, 25-17.
A kill from Green tied the third and final set up early, 1-1. A 3-0 West Virginia run got the squad within one point, as BYU led 8-7. The Cougars went on to lead by as many as six, 16-10 at the halfway point. West Virginia looked for a comeback, as a kill from McGath alongside an error from the Cougars made the score, 18-15. BYU went on to hold the lead, taking the third set with a 4-1 run, 25-18.
Next, the Mountaineers return home as they welcome TCU and Baylor. West Virginia will face off against No. 18 TCU on Nov. 27 inside of the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. ET, as the team celebrates Fansgiving during Wednesday's match. WVU will then host No. 17 Baylor on Nov. 29, it's Senior Day and first serve is scheduled for 2 p.m., inside the WVU Coliseum.
