MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (8-16, 2-11 Big 12) was downed by No. 9 Arizona State in three sets, 3-0 on Thursday night inside of the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

The Sundevils took the win with scores of 13-25, 17-25 and 21-25.

West Virginia held Arizona State to hit just .203 percent, while collecting 47 digs and four total blocks.

Senior outside hitter Hailey Green led the WVU offense with eight kills, while graduate student setter Lauren DeLo collected 21 assists. Junior middle blocker Chalina Lederer tallied three of West Virginia's four total blocks.

West Virginia earned the first point of the match, after Lederer landed a block to give the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead in the first set. Both teams traded points back and forth, as the score was tied at five, six and seven points. The Sundevils took control of the set with a 6-0 scoring run, leading 12-7. Lederer and sophomore middle blocker Maddy McGath added a block, followed by a McGath kill to let West Virginia trail, 14-10. Arizona State went on to close out the first set with an 8-2 run, 25-13.

Lederer struck first again in the second set, as WVU kicked it off with a 1-0 lead. After the score was tied at two all, three straight Sundevil points made the score, 5-2. Kills from junior outside hitter Quincey Coyle and Lederer got West Virginia within one, as ASU led, 7-6. After three straight Sundevil points, WVU responded with their own 3-0 run, keeping it close at 10-9. Arizona State responded, leading by as many as ten points, 20-10. The Mountaineers attempted a comeback with a 6-1 run at the end of second, before ASU would take the set, 25-17.

The third set kicked off with the score tied up at two all, before back-to-back Sundevil kills made it, 4-2. A kill from Green paired with an ASU error knotted the tally again, 5-5. Arizona State contributed a trio of points, as they took their largest lead of the set, 10-6. West Virginia would remain down until a 4-0 scoring run gave the Mountaineers the 14-13 advantage. The score would be tied twice more at 14 and 15 points, until a 7-0 ASU run made the score, 21-15. A string of four West Virginia points looked hopeful for the Mountaineers, as they trailed 21-19. WVU would score points off two ASU errors before the Sundevils took the third and final set, 25-21.

Next, West Virginia welcomes Arizona to the WVU Coliseum on Nov. 17. First serve is slated for noon ET, as Sunday's match will celebrate the program 50-year anniversary as alumni from across the years will be recognized. It's a gold rush, and fans are encouraged to wear gold to support the Mountaineers. Additionally, the first 300 fans in attendance will receive a 50th Anniversary cup, courtesy of WVU Medicine.
