MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four Mountaineers from the West Virginia University tennis team competed on the third day of the 2024 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championship at the Virginia Tennis Complex at Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday.
Senior
Michaela Kucharova was the lone Mountaineer competing in the main draw of the singles tournament as she faced Virginia Tech's Ozlem Uslu. Kucharova lost to Uslu, 6-1, 6-1.
In the singles back draw, senior
Mille Haagensen, redshirt junior
Maja Dodik and freshman Laura Villaneuva Morillo represented WVU.
Villanueva Morillo fell to George Mason's Cenan Liu, 6-4, 6-3. Dodik lost to Virginia Tech's Semra Aksu, 6-1, 6-3.
Haagensen advanced after defeating William and Mary's Francesca Davis, 7-6 (1), 6-3. In her second singles match of the day, Haagensen advanced after her opponent retired due to injury.
Haagensen will face William and Mary's Ine Stange on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. EST.
In doubles play, West Virginia had a tough outing as both pairings lost. The doubles team comprised of Haagensen and Villaneuva Morillo lost to Navy's Olivia Fermo and Emily Tannenbaum, 8-2. The pairing of Kucharova and Dodik narrowly lost 8-7 (5).
