MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four Mountaineers from the West Virginia University tennis team wrapped up the second day of the 2024 ITA Atlantic Regional Championship at the Virginia Tennis Complex at Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Friday.
Freshman
Laura Villanueva Morillo began competition on Thursday as she won two matches in qualifying to advance to the main draw of the singles tournament. Villanueva Morillo defeated Liberty's Maria Turchetto, 6-2, 6-3, before beating Morgan State's Marta Serra, 6-2, 6-4.
Senior
Michaela Kucharova was the only Mountaineer to win in the main draw of the singles tournament. In a battle, Kucharova defeated Maryland's Ema Kovacevic, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
With the victory, Kucharova advanced to the round of 32 and will face Virginia Tech's Ozlem Uslu on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. EST.
After a tremendous showing on Thursday to advance to the main draw, Villanueva Morillo was defeated, 3-6, 6-4, 5-7.
Redshirt junior
Maja Dodik fell to VCU's Mariam Ibrahim, 1-6, 1-6, and senior
Mille Haagensen lost to Georgetown's Natasha Kavarana, 6-1, (5) 6-7, 2-6.
Haagensen, Dodik and Villanueva Morillo will play in the singles backdraw on Saturday.
The Mountaineers were dominant in doubles play as both teams won to advance to the round of 32.
The doubles pairing of Kucharova and Dodik will face Marshall's Aisling McGrane and Nel Van Hout at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The pairing of Haagensen and Villanueva Morillo will face Navy's Olivia Fermo and Emily Tannenbaum at 3:30 p.m.
