No. 19 Texas Tech Bests WVU in Defensive Battle

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 19 Texas Tech at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Thursday night.
In a defensive battle that saw the two teams keeping the other from placing a shot on goal, a Texas Tech penalty in the 41st minute proved to be the difference in the match. The Mountaineers (10-4-2, 6-2-1 Big 12) had their own penalty opportunity to equalize in the 67th minute, but fifth-year senior midfielder Lilly McCarthy's attempt was saved and the Red Raiders claimed the victory.
West Virginia's best offensive chances to equalize came in the waning minutes of the match, as it pressed into the attacking third in an attempt to put a good ball on frame. However, the Texas Tech defense was stout and kept the Mountaineers off the board, just their second time being shut out this season.
In the final box score, both offenses were seemingly quiet, with TTU just outshooting WVU 8-6, including 4-2 in shots on goal. Senior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran led the Mountaineer offense with a pair of shots, while redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Smith was called on to make three saves in the match.
With the loss, WVU falls to 9-4-2 all-time against the Red Raiders, including 4-3-1 in games played in Morgantown. The loss marked West Virginia's first at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium this season.
WVU now looks ahead to its home slate finale against Colorado on Sunday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. The Mountaineers will celebrate 10 senior members of the squad, with Senior Day festivities taking place pre-match, beginning at 12:10 p.m. Gates will open at 11:45 a.m. to allow fans extra time to find their seats prior to the Senior Day recognition.
