MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team is set to begin its 2024 spring season on Monday, Jan. 29 and Tuesday, Jan. 30 at The N.I.T. in Tucson, Arizona.
Eighteen teams are scheduled to compete, including 14 teams in the Top 100. Teams competing are No. 6 Arizona State, No. 16 Arizona, No. 25 Texas A&M, No. 28 New Mexico, No. 35 Missouri, No. 36 SMU, No. 38 Loyola Marymount, No. 49 TCU, No. 51 Fresno State, No. 52 BYU, No. 59 Stanford, No. 69 Iowa State, No. 84 Saint Mary's, No. 94 WVU, Santa Clara, San Diego, Wyoming and New Mexico State.
"Playing against an elite field in Arizona provides a great opportunity for our team," coach Sean Covich said. "We were disappointed on how we ended the fall season at South Alabama, so the guys are ready to get back out there and compete. To be honest, it has been a long offseason, but I believe we are about to turn a corner on the golf course and as a team."
The Mountaineers will tee off Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. ET on the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Golf Club. Golfers will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.
Seniors Jackson Davenport and Oli Ménard, juniors Todd Duncan and Max Green and sophomore Kaleb Wilson will represent the Mountaineers at the event. The top four scores will count towards West Virginia's overall team score.
"Max Green had a good fall season, winning at Boston College and playing well pretty much every single round," Covich said. "Oli Ménard is playing the best golf of his WVU career and has really matured into a leader for us. After some struggles late last fall, Jackson Davenport is playing good golf again. Kaleb Wilson and Todd Duncan will have a chance to show what they are made of against some of the best players in college golf.
"A lot of credit needs to go to our assistant coach Will Koras, who has been phenomenal getting our guys ready. I am very happy to have him leading our player development."
