Mountaineers to Host Houston on Wednesday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team is back at home for the first time in over a week on Wednesday, Jan. 17, when they host Houston at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
Wednesday's matchup against the Cougars will be broadcast live on the Mountaineer Sports Network, including 98.3. WBKE-FM, with Andrew Caridi on the call. Additionally, the game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with Nick Farrell and Meg Bulger on the call. Live stats and game notes will be available on WVUsports.com.
The contest will serve as the 'Sneakerhead Night' at the WVU Coliseum. All fans are encouraged to wear their best sneakers and swag for a chance to be entered to win prizes throughout the night. You could even win a pair of gold and blue Nike dunk lows.
Wednesday's contest marks the 4th all-time meeting between WVU (14-2, 3-2 Big 12) and UH (11-5, 2-3 Big 12). The Mountaineers are a perfect 3-0 against the Cougars, including a 1-0 mark at the WVU Coliseum. The pair last met on March 20, 2011, when WVU downed No. 22 Houston, 79-73, on the road at the Ferrell Center.
Houston dropped its opening three Big 12 games, falling to No. 6 Baylor, No. 11 Kansas State and Texas Tech. The Cougars have won its last two conference contests, most recently defeating TCU, 77-66, at the Fertilla Center in Houston.
Houston comes into the contest turning its opponents over 23.6 times per game while adding 13.2 steals per contest. The marks are the second-best in the conference, behind only the Mountaineers.
The Cougars average 74.9 points per game and are led by two double-digit scorers in Laila Blair (16.9) and N'Yah Boyd (10.4). Bria Patterson leads the effort on the glass with 4.7 rebounds per game.
Last time out, West Virginia got back in the win column after dropping two straight with a 76-59 victory over UCF. WVU was led in scoring by junior guard JJ Quinerly with 21 points. The effort pushed her over 1,000 points in her career as she notched her eighth game with 20-plus points this season.
Quinerly (18.3), sophomore guard Jordan Harrison (14.4) and fifth-year senior guard Lauren Fields (10.3) pace WVU's offensive effort. Redshirt junior Kyah Watson averages 5.4 rebounds per game. The quartet all average over 2.1 steals per game, led by Quinerly's conference-leading 3.0 mark.
Harrison has racked up 86 assists this season and is averaging 5.4 per contest which is the third-best in the conference.
West Virginia averages 14.7 steals per contest which is the best mark in the nation. Additionally, WVU forces 24.8 turnovers per game, the fourth most in the country. The Mountaineers add the best turnover margin in the country at 9.8.
