MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia student-athlete Braden Barry has been named the Big 12 Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the conference on Wednesday.
In the classroom, Barry had a 3.73 GPA while studying finance and was also a two-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection. Additionally, he was named to the Dean's List, Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll, and the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll during his time with the Mountaineers.
On the field, the Louisville native started all 60 games for the Mountaineers in center field in 2023 and hit .290 with eight home runs and 44 RBIs, helping lead West Virginia to its first Big 12 title in program history. He also added 19 doubles, 57 runs scored, and 24 stolen bases en route to being named to the All-Big 12 Second Team.
Barry is the first Mountaineer in program history to be named the Big 12 Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He also joins Jordan Brewster of the WVU women's soccer team to be Big 12 Scholar-Athletes in the 2022-23 academic year.
This past July, Barry was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the eighth round of the MLB Draft. Through 10 games in the minor leagues this summer, he has hit .259 with two home runs, five RBIs, and a .955 OPS, playing for the Blue Jays Rookie League team as well as the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays.
The Big 12 Conference established its Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 2012-13. A recipient is named in each conference-sponsored sport. Every Big 12 institution nominates one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees must be a junior or senior (athletic and academic standing), have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 20 percent of the team's scheduled contests and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
