Historic Season Comes to an End for Mountaineers Against Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 4, 2023) – The West Virginia baseball team saw its season come to an end on Sunday as the No. 2-seed Mountaineers fell to No. 12 national seed Kentucky, 10-0, in an elimination game at Kentucky Proud Park.
The Mountaineers finish the season with a 40-20 record. The 40 wins matched a single-season program record, set in 1994.
Sophomore JJ Wetherholt finished the day 3-for-4 with a double. He finished the season with 101 hits, tying a West Virginia single-season record, set by Tyler Kuhn in 2008. The Mars, Pennsylvania native also raised his batting average to .449 to retake the nation's lead, ahead of FAU's Nolan Schanuel. The next highest batting average of players still in the NCAA Tournament are Jonah Cox of Oral Roberts and Tyler Davis of Sam Houston, who are both sitting at .429.
It is also the highest batting average for a Power Five player since Buster Posey hit .463 for Florida State in 2008.
Kentucky jumped out in front with two runs in the first and another in the second before repeating that pattern in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead.
WVU had its best chance to score in the third with runners on first and third and one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
The Wildcats added a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to produce the final score.
On the mound, freshman Maxx Yehl threw 1.1 scoreless innings while fellow freshman Robby Porco tossed 1.2 hitless innings with a strikeout to provide some bright spots for the Mountaineers.
