Mountaineers Take Down Marshall in Midweek Action

"What a crowd tonight," said head coach Randy Mazey. "We knew it was going to be a dog fight. A lot of energy in the park, we were playing hard, they were playing hard, the game wasn't pretty by any means, but we are fun to watch, and I appreciate everyone coming out."
Sophomore JJ Wetherholt had three hits on the night, raising his average to .462 for the season. Junior Landon Wallace added two hits and drove in three runs while freshman Sam White hit a home run as part of his two-hit night.
On the mound, freshman Carson Estridge earned the win by throwing 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout. Redshirt-freshman David Hagaman impressed in 2.0 hitless innings while junior Carlson Reed struck out five in the final two innings to earn his second save of the season.
Marshall took an early lead in the first without a hit, but the Mountaineers responded in the home half with four of their own. Leonard drove in a run in the first inning for the third straight game before Wallace delivered a bases-loaded triple to clear the bases.
The Herd got two runs back in the second on a triple of their own, but WVU was able to maintain its lead.
The two teams exchanged runs in the fourth and fifth with redshirt-senior McNeely driving in graduate student Dayne Leonard on a double over the centerfielder's head.
In the sixth, the Mountaineers tacked on a run on a double play before White hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right field.
The two teams traded runs again in the seventh with one of the highlights of the night coming from Wetherholt as he scored from second base on a deep sacrifice fly from junior Braden Barry.
Marshall got back to within one with two runs in the eighth. The Mountaineers got one run back in the bottom of the inning when graduate student Tevin Tucker came home to score as Wetherholt purposely got stuck in a rundown between first and second.
After surrendering a leadoff single to begin the ninth, Reed slammed the door on the Herd by striking out the next three batters.
The Mountaineers will return to action this weekend when they open Big 12 play at Kansas State. First pitch on Friday is set 7 p.m. ET.
