MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two West Virginia baseball players took home Big 12 weekly honors, Monday, with sophomore JJ Wetherholt earning Player of the Week and fifth year senior Blaine Traxel collecting Pitcher of the Week.
Wetherholt hit .529 (9-for17) with two home runs, three doubles, four RBI, and six runs scored while leading the Mountaineers to a 3-1 week against No. 13 Maryland and Arizona. He was also 8-for-8 on stolen bases including a straight steal of home against the Wildcats in the 11th inning of a 6-5 victory.
The Mars, Pennsylvania native opened the week with two hits against the Terrapins and three stolen bases. Out in Tucson, he hit a two-run home run in game one before playing hero in the 11th inning. With the score tied at five, he hit a double, stole third, and then dashed home for a straight steal of home. After another three-hit day on Saturday, he opened Sunday's contest with an opposite field home run in the first inning against the Wildcats.
It is the 14th time in WVU history that a Mountaineer has claimed Player of the Week honors and the first since Austin Davis on April 11, 2022
Traxel put on the best pitching performance of the season on Saturday against Arizona, throwing a complete game with six strikeouts while allowing just one run on five hits. The Burbank, California native, with family in attendance, retired the final 13 batters that came to the plate and 21 of the last 24.
It was the first complete game for the Mountaineers since Jackson Wolf tossed one against Texas in the 2021 Big 12 Tournament. For Traxel, it was the sixth of his career, having thrown five during his tenure at CSUN.
Traxel is the 16th Mountaineer to take home Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and the first since Wolf on March 29th, 2021.
The Mountaineers are back on the field this evening in Scottsdale as they take on the Diamondbacks in an exhibition. Their next regular-season game is this Friday at William & Mary with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
