MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team will compete for its nation-best 20th NCAA title at the 2022-23 NCAA Championships, as announced on Monday afternoon by the NCAA Rifle Committee.
"We're obviously happy to be competing at the NCAA Championships," coach Jon Hammond said. "You have to be there to compete for trophies."
This year's NCAA Championships, hosted by Akron, are scheduled for March 10-11, and will take place in Akron, Ohio.
"Now, it's about preparing for the championship, and it's really nice to have a very similar match this weekend for our conference championships, which will be two days and against a number of other high level teams," Hammond added. "We'll focus on this weekend first then start fully preparing for NCAAs."
West Virginia has qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of the last 15 postseasons, all of which have come under Jon Hammond's leadership. WVU owns a nation-best 19 national titles and has won six under Hammond, including five straight from 2013-17.
The Mountaineers qualified as the field's second-ranked team with a qualifying mark of 9489.33. Joining WVU at this year's championships are No. 1 TCU, No. 3 Alaska-Fairbanks, No. 4 Murray State, No. 5 Kentucky, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 7 Nebraska and No. 8 Air Force.
This year's field earned championship bids based on the average of its three highest regular-season aggregate scores, with each score recorded at a different range. The average of the three scores was then added to the aggregate total from the team's designated qualifier to determine the final field.
A total of 48 competitors will compete at the championships, with eight selected as individual qualifiers. An NCAA rule established eight years ago stipulates that a school that qualified is prohibited from sending individual qualifiers.
Next up, West Virginia hosts the Great America Rifle Championships in Morgantown on Feb. 24-25 in the WVU Shell Building. A start time will be announced later this week.
