MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team is set for the 2023 Big 12 Cross Country Championship on Oct. 28 in Ames, Iowa.
Iowa State will serve host for this year's championship, with the race being held at the Iowa State Cross Country Course. The women's 6k is slated for 12 p.m. ET, followed by an awards ceremony at 12 p.m. where the top-15 finishers from the men's and women's races will be named to the All-Big 12 Team.
This year's conference championship will feature the leagues newest additions, BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF. The newcomers will compete against West Virginia, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, and Texas Tech.
"This year will be the most competitive version of this race since West Virginia joined the conference in 2012," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "As each of the current 14 members sponsor cross country, making this year's championship the deepest championship to date."
In 2022, redshirt senior Ceili McCabe took first place at the conference championship, and was the first Mountaineer to win back-to-back Big 12 individual titles. West Virginia finished the race second overall, with an overall score of 49 points to set the program record for the lowest point total at the Big 12 Championship.
"We are excited to be a part of such a historic moment, on Saturday we will get off the line and compete to the best of our abilities with a relatively new team. Last year's graduating class was incredible and lead themselves to three straight NCAA Championships, but it's time for this new group to begin their own legacy," Cleary added.
Last time out, the Mountaineers competed at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania hosted by Lehigh University on Sept. 30. Redshirt senior Sarah Tait finished 14th overall, leading the Mountaineers with a time of 20:38.0.
West Virginia ranks seventh in the Mid-Atlantic Region Rankings as released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Associate (USTFCCCA), last week.
