January 27, 2023 07:55 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team wrapped up day one of the Penn State National Open hosted by Penn State University at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track in University Park, Pennsylvania on Friday, Jan. 27.
"Today was a little step forward for the program," coach Sean Cleary said. "Sada throwing her best for the season and Mikenna running a lifetime best in the 800 to finish the night."
Redshirt senior Mikaela Lucki set a personal best mile time of 4:39.10 to secure third for the Mountaineers. Sophomore Megan Weaver also competed in the mile run and crossed the finish line at 5:19.07.
"Lucki also ran a lifetime best in the mile dipping under 4:40," coach Cleary said. "This was Mikenna and Mikaela's first time under 2:10 and 4:40, respectively. Lucki falls into the 8 th spot on our all-time mile list. Mik has a very good chance to move into the top five before the year ends, which would be quite the accomplishment as all seven in front her became All-Americans in their career."
Senior Sada Wright earned a season best weight throw distance of 17.01 meters and took 11th out of 31 competitors. Friday marks her best throw since the 2022 Big 12 Indoor Championships, when she threw 17.42 meters.
Sophomore Cassandra Williamson was the first Mountaineer to cross the finish line in the 800-meter with a time of 2:09.00. Williamson claimed seventh, while junior Mikenna Vanderheyden finished 13th with a time of 2:09.72, setting a lifetime best in the process. Redshirt Sophomore Jo-Lauren Keane round out West Virginia in the 800, notching 16th in 2:11.74.
WVU continues in action at the Penn State National Open tomorrow, Jan. 28. Action at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track is slated to begin at 10 a.m. ET.
