
Mountaineers Set for Weekend in the Buckeye State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team continues its spring schedule this weekend, as it travels to the Buckeye State to face off against No. 11 Ohio State on Saturday, Jan. 21, and No. 10 Akron on Sunday, Jan. 22.
Saturday's contest against the Buckeyes will be shot in two relays throughout the day. The first relay will begin at 9:15 a.m. ET, and the second relay will follow at 1:15 p.m. The first relay in Akron on Sunday begins at 8:15 a.m., while the second relay opens at 12:15 p.m. A live scorecard for the matches can be found at ncaarifle.org. West Virginia (12-3, 6-0 GARC) is 50-0 all-time against Ohio State (10-2), with the series beginning in 1974. Sunday marks the 21st meeting between the Mountaineers and Zips (8-5), with WVU claiming the first 20 matches going back to 1952.
The Mountaineers are coming off a pair of matches in Alaska, taking second in both contests. WVU started the past weekend on Jan. 13, facing off against No. 2 Alska-Fairbanks, falling to the Nanooks, 4,736-4,744. The trip was brought to a close with a match against Alaska, then-ranked No. 3 Kentucky and No. 16 Georgia Southern. The squad earned a 4,751, tallying a 2,371 in smallbore and a 2,380 in air rifle. West Virginia's smallbore score was good enough to tie the national record.
Five Mountaineers finished in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard on Jan. 13, including Senior Mary Tucker who earned first with an aggregate score of 1,191, shooting a 594 in smallbore and a 597 in air rifle. Tucker also tied for first during the final match in The Last Frontier, notching a 1,193 aggregate score, with a 594 in smallbore and 599 in air rifle. Her 599 tied her season best performance.
WVU ranks No. 3 nationally in aggregate average (4,728.889). Additionally, the Mountaineers are No. 3 in the nation in air rifle average (2,381.111) and smallbore average (2,347.778).
Senior Mary Tucker continues to lead the squad in aggregate average (1,190.333), smallbore average (592.5) and air rifle average (597.833). Tucker is No. 1 nationally in aggregate average, No. 2 in air rifle average and smallbore average.
