Clemson Hands West Virginia First Home Loss

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 17-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team fell to Clemson, 1-0, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, on Thursday night.
The lone score in the contest came on a West Virginia own goal in the 10th minute, as Mountaineer senior defender Gabrielle Robinson attempted to deflect a Clemson corner kick. From there, WVU (3-2-2) was forced to play from behind for most of the match and struggled to break even with the visiting Tigers (4-1-2).
West Virginia had the chance to tie it in the 67th minute when senior midfielder Maya McCutcheon drew a foul in the box, but fifth-year senior defender Jordan Brewster was unable to convert on the penalty-kick attempt.
Despite the end result, the final box score showed the Mountaineers outshooting Clemson, 10-5, including a 6-1 edge in the second half. The two teams tied, 4-4, in shots on goal, while the Tigers held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Both goalies were called upon to make four saves, with Clemson keeper Halle Mackiewicz making a big stop on Brewster's PK try.
McCutcheon and junior midfielder AJ Rodriguez paced the offense with a pair of shots apiece, while four different Mountaineers placed one shot on goal.
Clemson handed West Virginia its first loss at home this season, as well as its first in the all-time series. The Mountaineers move to 2-1 against the Tigers.
Of note, sophomore forward Leah Sparacio made her first appearance on the pitch on Thursday night since sustaining a season-ending knee injury early last fall.
West Virginia concludes its week at home on Sunday, Sept. 11, as it welcomes Bucknell to Morgantown, for a 1 p.m. ET, kick at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. It's Patriot Day, and free admission will be granted for military personnel and first responders with proper I.D. The match also is Family Day, and fans can purchase four tickets, along with a $10 concession voucher, for $25.
